People were good at imagining hells, and some they occupied while they were alive. (CJ)

He had the kind of subjects who used the words ‘find out’ when they meant ‘ascertain’. Damnation was too good for them. (E)
Hell needed horribly bright, self-centred people like Eric. They were much better at being nasty than demons could ever manage. (E)
The path to wisdom does, in fact, begin with a single step.
Where people go wrong is in ignoring all the thousands of other steps that come after it. They make the single step of deciding to become one with the universe, and for some reason forget to take the logical next step of living for seventy years on a mountain and a daily bowl of rice and yak-butter tea that would give it any kind of meaning. While evidence says that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, they’re probably all on first steps. (H) Crowley had been extremely impressed with the warranties offered by the computer industry, and had in fact sent a bundle Below to the department that drew up the Immortal Soul agreements, with a yellow memo form attached just saying:‘Learn, guys.' (GO)
It is said that the Devil has all the best tunes.
This is broadly true. But Heaven has the best choreographers. (GO) ... the gods of the Disc have never bothered much about judging the souls of the dead, and so people only go to hell if that’s where they believe, in their deepest heart, that they deserve to go. Which they won’t do if they don’t know about it. This explains why it is important to shoot missionaries on sight. (E)
There were some things on which even they were united. No more policy statements, no more consultative documents, no more morale-boosting messages to all staff. This was Hell, but you had to draw the line somewhere. (E)
Rincewind stared, and knew that there were far worse things than Evil. All the demons of Hell would torture your very soul, but that was precisely because they valued souls very highly; evil would always try to steal the universe, but at least it considered the universe worth stealing. But the grey world behind those empty eyes would trample and destroy without even according its victims the dignity of hatred. It wouldn’t even notice them. (LF)
'There’s no’ a lot o’ laughs in the underworld. This one used tae be called Limbo, ye ken, cuz the door was verrae low.' (W)
Hell, it has been suggested, is other people.
This has always come as a bit of a surprise to many demons, who had always thought that hell was sticking sharp things into people and pushing them into lakes of blood and so on. (E) |
