'I have seen horrible things, and some of them all the more horrible because they were, well, normal.' (ISWM)

'I shall deal with the matter momentarily,’ he said. It was a good word. It always made people hesitate. They were never quite sure whether he meant he’d deal with it now, or just deal with it briefly. And no-one ever dared ask. (GG)
Witches aren’t superstitious. We are what people are superstitious about. (W)
Witches aren’t allowed to be afraid. (W)
... no one had a bad word to say about witches. At least, not if he wanted to wake up in the morning the same shape as he went to bed. (ER)
Bits of Miss Tick’s teachings floated through her head: Always face what you fear. Have enough money, never too much, and some string. Even if it’s not your fault it’s your responsibility. Witches deal with things. Never stand between two mirrors. Never cackle. Do what you must do. Never lie, but you don’t always have to be honest. Never wish. Especially don’t wish upon a star, which is astronomically stupid. Open you eyes, and then open your eyes again. (HFS)
The little flickering part of his brain that was still sparking coherent thought through the fog of mind-numbing terror that filled Colon’s head was telling him that he was so far out of his depth that the fish had lights on their noses. (FE)
'Stumps? Stumps? I used to like this forest. It was…well, it was darksome. You don’t get proper darksome any more. You really knew what terror was, in a forest like that.' (TB)
Next day was a good day, right up to the point where it became a tight little bowl of terror. (W)
Animals loose in a car are never a good idea. Goats are generally the worst, but until you realise there’s a tortoise stuck under your brake pedal you’ve never known the meaning of fear, and possibly not the meaning of ‘old age’ either. (UC)
The other trainees laughed in the nervous, tittering way of people who’ve seen someone else attract the teacher’s attention and are glad it isn’t them. (AM)
'There’s no need to get hysterical,’ said Adora Belle.
‘Yes there is! What there isn’t a need for is staying calm!' (MM) 'What shall we do?’said Twoflower.
‘Panic?’ said Rincewind hopefully. He always held that panic was the best means of survival. (LF) '... because in this world, after everyone panics, there’s always got to be someone to tip the wee out of the shoe.' (TOT)
'You get more air close to the ground,’ said Angalo.‘I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up.’
‘Why not?’ said Gurder. ‘Dunno. It’s frightened of heights, I guess.' (Wings) ... Mrs. Arcanum came downstairs and into the kitchen armed with a lamp, a poker and most importantly with her hair in curlers. The combination would be a winner against all but the most iron-stomached intruder. (TT)
... you can shut your eyes but you can’t shut your mind. (W)
... Granny Weatherwax doing Good is arguably more to be feared than any other witch doing Bad ... (PP)
She gave a depreciating little chuckle. And if Nanny Ogg had been listening, she would have resolved as follows: that no maddened cackle from Black Aliss of infamous memory, no evil little giggle from some crazed vampyre whose morals were worse than his spelling, no side-splitting guffaw from the most inventive torturer, was quite so unnerving as a happy little chuckle from a Granny Weatherwax about to do what’s best. (Ma)
... the trouble with unimaginable horrors was that they were only too easy to imagine. (LF)
Sam Vimes looked panicky, a figure of authority caught once again in a domestic situation. (Th)
YOU FEAR TO DIE?
‘It’s not that I don’t want…I mean, I’ve always…it’s just that life is a habit that’s hard to break…' (RM) The previous governess had used various monsters and bogeymen as a form of discipline. There was always something waiting to eat or carry off bad boys and girls for crimes like stuttering or defiantly and aggravatingly persisting in writing with their left hand. There was always a Scissor Man waiting for a little girl who sucked her thumb, always a bogeyman in the cellar. Of such bricks is the innocence of childhood constructed. (H)
'I don't think humans want to know things that disturb them.' (Wings)
'There be a lot o’ men who became heroes cuz they wuz too scared tae run!' (W)
